Woodstock Day School is a private school in Woodstock, NY ranging from day care to 12th grade. The LGBTQ+ club at WDS wanted to make a short about themselves. One of the club members fathers is the author/director Shalom Auslander (Happyish and Forskins Lament). He enlisted the director/editor Jon Greenhalgh (Team Foxcatcher) to edit, and myself to do the cinematography and color. Little did we know we would wind up spending five days filming dozens of kids, teachers, and parents. With Jon’s keen editing skills the end product is really a conversation piece of only the kids speaking and the librarian. She was a beacon of release for them all, going into the library’s back room to express themselves, and at times cry. Hence the title of the short, The Crying Room. It ran in the Woodstock Film Festival of 2018. This was a pro bono project for all involved.
